Noted pastor, radio host Alistair Begg visits

Alistair Begg, a pastor, author and host of the national radio program “Truth for Life,” addressed students Friday morning at Liberty University’s convocation.

This was Begg’s first visit to Liberty. He will also be speaking at The Power to Change conference this weekend at Thomas Road Baptist Church.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome, by the stature and size of the whole place, and I’m just looking forward to the rest of the day,” Begg said after convocation.

Begg has been the pastor of Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio, since 1983. He graduated from the London School of Theology and has been involved in ministry since 1975.

After beginning his message with prayer, Begg encouraged students by reading from Ecclesiastes 12:1:

“Remember your creator in the days of your youth,” and II Timothy 3:14: “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it.”

“I really just have one phrase to give to you today … ‘keep on,’” he told them. “ … I want to encourage you to keep on [being] convicted, convinced and communicating the truth.”

His message focused on three questions he said all people ask themselves about the human experience: where do we come from, what are we, and where are we going. The answers are in the Bible, he said. We come from God and are created in His image. But we are people who can be described as fallen and fragile, because no part of our lives is unaffected by sin. As for where we are going, Begg emphasized how important it is for Christians to remember the reality of death and judgment in a culture obsessed with youth.

“It is a call to listen to what people are saying, it is a call to learn the questions people are asking, it is a call to think about what the Bible is saying, and then it is a call to talk into the lives of individuals who are asking these three questions.”

  • Listen to Begg on Liberty’s radio station, WRVL “Victory FM” (at 88.3 in Lynchburg) daily at 3:30 p.m. His show can be heard on more than 1,000 radio stations across the nation.
  • Begg is the author of several books, including “The Hand of God,” “Pathway to Freedom,” “On Being a Pastor” (with Derek Prime) and a revision of Spurgeon’s devotional, “Morning and Evening.”
