A Word from the President

When Dr. Jerry Falwell invited me to serve on Liberty’s Board of Trustees in 1996, I didn’t know that I would one day be serving alongside each of you as president. All I knew was that this university was making an impact on a world desperately in need of Christ, and I wanted to be part of its mission.

Nearly 50 years have passed since Liberty opened its doors in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College, but its mission of Training Champions for Christ has never wavered. God is still using Liberty students to impact our world for His glory, and He is using you too. Everything we do intentionally trains students to fulfill their God-given purpose. This is what makes us so special.

We have overcome much in our short history, and this last year has proven how resilient and hardworking our Liberty community can be. Despite the odds, we have remained open when other colleges were shutting down, owing much to the safety efforts put in place by our Student Health & Wellness Staff and the diligence of students, faculty, and staff.  We also have opened doors on new facilities, such as the Liberty Arena and Liberty Indoor Tennis Center. Our students are winning championships, like Flames Football claiming their second Cure Bowl title, and serving our neighboring communities through disaster relief. We have much to thank God for and are blessed to see His provision at work.

As I look back on the past year, I am greatly encouraged by what I have witnessed on Liberty’s campus. Our students truly reflect the love of Christ — and you, our faculty and staff, have helped make this a reality. Training Champions for Christ is more than just the mission of Liberty University; it’s a mission we live out each day. No matter your role or job description, you are training the men and women on this campus to become future leaders. They see your dedication and how you serve them and one another. Our students recognize that Liberty is different because our faculty and staff live differently. You are Champions for Christ, and your influence extends much further than you know. Thank you for living out the mission and serving our students.

In a short while, we’ll be celebrating our graduates during our 48th Commencement May 11–15. I am thankful that we are now able to celebrate our graduates both virtually and in person this year. I hope you will join me in congratulating them over the next few weeks as we send them out to pursue God’s calling upon their lives.

Jerry Prevo
President

Commencement 2021 Update

With some COVID-19 restrictions still in place, Liberty is hosting Commencement 2021 in a hybrid format to ensure the safety of our graduates, their families, and the Liberty community. The Commencement Ceremony will be virtual and, in light of a recent announcement regarding regulations adjustments for graduations, Degree Presentation Ceremonies will now be held at outdoor locations.

This unique opportunity to celebrate both online and in person means we can join with all of our graduates from across the United States and around the world in celebrating their achievements. The virtual Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 15, at 7 p.m., and Degree Presentation Ceremonies will be held at outdoor locations from Tuesday, May 11, through Saturday, May 15. They can also be watched online for those unable to attend in person.

Celebrate Liberty’s graduates by watching the Commencement Ceremony online and follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates. You can also follow #LUGRAD and share in the Commencement experience with our graduates.

A special congratulations to the faculty and staff who are among our 2020 and 2021 graduates. You made it!

Construction Updates

From additional parking to new athletic facilities, Liberty University has continued to expand and renovate its campus to maintain its standard of world-class facilities. Three of the newest structural additions to campus include the Liberty Arena, Liberty Indoor Tennis Center, and Runk & Pratt Garage.

Opened in November, the Liberty Arena gives men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball a place to call their own and provides 125,000 square feet of space for spectator seating, locker rooms, training facilities, and office space. In February, the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center opened its doors as the new home of Liberty’s men’s and women’s tennis teams. The building is adjacent to the Cook Tennis Center and features six courts, seating for 100 spectators, locker rooms, a team lounge, and a concessions area. Across the highway on Campus East, the newly named Runk & Pratt Garage offers five floors of much-needed parking with easy access to main campus through the pedestrian tunnel.

Several buildings and venues are receiving upgrades across campus. Updates to the Vines Center’s roof recently finished, and it now features a flattened design with the LU monogram on its highest point. Williams Stadium entered a second phase by updating Carter Tower with more space for spectators and food services, while the Circle residence halls will receive new roofs to match the ones added to the Hill dormitories. Liberty Mountain Hydaway Outdoor Center is expanding the current 5-acre lake to 31 acres with a new dam constructed downstream from the current one.

Though construction is still in the planning stages, an exciting project soon to hit campus is an expanded dining hall to be located between Residential Commons III and Liberty Lake. The facility — named the New Reber-Thomas in honor of the current dining hall’s original donors, Dan Reber and Jimmy Thomas Sr. — will replace The Food Court at Reber-Thomas and provide up to 2,700 additional indoor seats and 3,600 outdoor seats on the covered patio, all to accommodate the growing student body. The New Reber-Thomas is scheduled to open in Fall 2022.
