The Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) Center for Research is now available on Cureus, an online journal of medicine platform that will allow LUCOM researchers and students to publish their peer-reviewed work. LUCOM’s research channel may be found on Cureus.com.
“We are very excited about this project,” said Carl R. Hoegerl, DO, MSc, MSIT, FACP, associate professor of neurology. “It is like having our own journal. Cureus allows us to be able to have the manuscripts indexed in national databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar in a matter of weeks to months. When starting your own online journal platform, it can take a minimum of two to three years, and it’s an arduous process. Cureus has created a way to be able to expedite that process.” Dr. Hoegerl also serves as the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine.
The LUCOM research faculty have recently recognized that accreditors nationwide are showing signs of encouraging medical students to be more involved in research and scholarly activity. According to Dr. Hoegerl, it is anticipated that within a few years, it will likely be a requirement of all medical students. “There is a growing need nationally and locally for medical students to have more instruction and research-based experiences. Having LUCOM on Cureus is a great encouragement to our faculty and students, as well as faculty and students from across the university, to see their results published on a highly recognizable platform,” he said.
Before research is published on Cureus there is a criterion to have a biomedical or clinical focus. The LUCOM Center for Research editorial team will first review and then send to an outside peer review team to help maintain a sense of objectivity in deciding on which papers should be published. As an additional layer of screening, an editorial team for Cureus will also review. Information and review details are available on LUCOM’s Center for Research channel.
Dr. Hoegerl credits LUCOM Dean Joseph R. Johnson, DO, FACOOG (Dist), for his encouragement and support in finalizing the details for LUCOM to have a channel on Cureus. “LUCOM faculty have been looking at the increased need for us to be able to provide our students the opportunity to participate in scholarly/research activity and opportunities. Working with Dr. Johnson, we were quickly able to get an agreement signed, and now we have an entire editorial team that is leading the project.”
“I also give thanks to the founding members of the LUCOM editorial team for their work on helping to get this research opportunity started and moving,” added Dr. Hoegerl. “When it comes to online publishing, writers want to put their work where readers can easily find it. In the case of our e-channel, our authors can now publish their manuscripts where works are highly indexed, all through the support of Cureus.”
