On April 20, 2018, Liberty University School of Law in partnership with Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) and the Lynchburg Bar Association hosted a Pro Bono Summit in Central Virginia, the first of its kind. More than 100 attorneys from around the Commonwealth registered to attend the conference, which included four Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits on a variety of topics.
Speakers John E. Whitfield, Esq. of the Blue Ridge Legal Society, and Victor O. Cardwell, Esq. and Robert C. Wood III, Esq. of Woods Rogers, PLC touched on access to justice, diversity, inclusion and the #metoo movement, and an overview of Virginia statutes of limitation in civil cases.
Additionally, attendees heard from Aaron Minguez, one of Liberty Law’s first students to participate in a joint pro bono clinic with VLAS. Minguez noted how the clinical experience has both added depth and invaluable insight to his legal education and impacted his desired career path he will take after passing the bar exam this summer.
Guests were treated to a lunch sponsored by Woods Rogers, PLC and heard Jim Sandman, President of Legal Services Corp., discuss the importance and absolute necessity of pro bono legal services in addressing the justice gap in the United States.
Due to the rousing success and positive feedback received from all, VLAS, the Lynchburg Bar Association, and Liberty University School of Law will host a second Pro Bono Summit in April 2019.
