Biography
A native of Augusta, Georgia, Professor Smiley pursued undergraduate studies at the Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta University) and holds numerous healthcare compliance certifications.
Professor Smiley attended the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree. During law school, he served as a law clerk for the South Carolina House of Representatives’ Ethics and Judiciary Committees. After graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Matthew J. Perry, Jr., a noted civil rights leader and United States District Court judge for the District of South Carolina. Professor Smiley has spent his legal career representing and advising school districts, colleges, universities, and health-care organizations in various legal, compliance, and regulatory matters.
Ralph Smiley is a Senior Counsel in Liberty University’s Office of Legal Affairs. He joined the Liberty Law faculty as an adjunct in August 2023.
