STEM OPT Extension for Employers
Thank you for considering hiring an international graduate from Liberty University!
While there are a few additional hiring details to consider, we believe the benefits of employing an international graduate of Liberty University will far outweigh any additional steps you must take in the hiring process.
The Office of International Student Services wants to assist both our students and your organization as you plan the next steps in ensuring compliance with Federal Regulations.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a 12-month period in which international students, who have graduated from a U.S. college or university, are given special work authorization. While on OPT, the student is still considered to be of valid Student (F-1) Visa Status by the U.S. government and has certain reporting responsibilities back to the university.
OPT is designed to allow students to gain valuable working experience in the area of their most recent degree. Students who have earned a degree in the U.S. in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) may be eligible to apply for an additional 24 months of OPT with their qualifying employer. This allows students in STEM degrees to have a total of three years of OPT.
