Capstone: Senior Design Project

Ready for Real-World Engineering Experience?

The Capstone program is the culminating academic experience for our senior engineering students. It will challenge and prepare you as you grow professionally and transition from the academic world to your industry profession.

Through the Capstone program, you’ll engage in industry design challenges as part of your senior fall and spring semester courses. Capstone projects are industry-based with real-world opportunities and challenges. You’ll gain hands-on engineering experience while participating companies benefit from completed projects and recruiting talented students.

Each Capstone team typically consists of 4-6 students, and the project assigned to the team is determined by the project topic and requirements, students’ programs and backgrounds, and students’ preferences. Each student spends approximately 250 to 300 hours working on the Capstone project over two semesters.

Towards the end of the spring semester, a Capstone Expo is held where all Capstone teams demonstrate their design work to their clients, faculty members, students, and visitors.

Senior Design Project Categories

The School of Engineering at Liberty University offers five residential undergraduate engineering programs: Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Civil, and Industrial and Systems Engineering. Students in each program are offered the following three categories for their Capstone projects.

Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Engineering

Projects in this often multidisciplinary category typically involve designing, manufacturing, testing, and delivering a functional, physical prototype.

Civil Engineering

These projects involve at least three of the major technical areas in civil engineering: structural, geotechnical, transportation, construction, and water resources. Detailed designs for all involved technical areas are required.

Industrial and Systems Engineering

Focusing on process improvements, these projects involve modeling, simulation, and delivering verified process models.

Become an Industry Sponsor

Have a design challenge that needs to be solved? Our Capstone collaboration industry sponsors are clients who serve in an advisory role with a Capstone team and, most importantly, get to evaluate the team’s solution. The client meets periodically with the team during the two Capstone semesters to provide input as students research the problem and design a solution.

Daniel Lykins | Mechanical Engineering

One amazing and unique advantage of the Capstone program at LU is that nearly all the projects are sponsored by professional engineering companies with real-world problems. Through my capstone, I had the opportunity to work with a highly reputable aerospace firm and gain invaluable experience. Working side-by-side with the company allowed me to get a foot in the door and even led to a full-time position after graduation.

Isabella John | Industrial & Systems Engineering

Participating in Liberty University’s School of Engineering capstone program was a rewarding experience that equipped me with an excellent foundation to enter the workforce … Powerful experiences can be provided to students through the collaboration of universities and industry professionals, and my experience is a testament to this fact.

Josh Ingram | Electrical Engineering

Capstone at Liberty proved to be far more difficult and rewarding than I ever expected it to be. My team and I were tasked with developing a tool for NAVAIR to assist in the maintenance of the V22 Osprey … I believe God used our team as a vessel to show how great Liberty students are and can be, not just as engineers, but as individuals with high standards and integrity imparted by the fruits of our faith.

Daniel Hembree | Mechanical Engineering

The senior capstone experience is the crossroads of technical problem-solving, logistical project management, and interpersonal client-company interactions … It was genuinely a great experience that properly poised us for entry into the engineering workforce!

Ben Truxel | Mechanical Engineering

Capstone was a chance to both grow and prove my skills as a Liberty University engineer … Looking back, I can say I helped my client cut costs by minimizing material and streamlining manufacturing, and this makes capstone one of the most fulfilling experiences I had in undergraduate engineering.
