Undergraduate Gate Process for Educator Preparation Program (EPP)

The Gate system is designed as a set of checkpoints to ensure you have completed the necessary requirements to successfully complete the Educator Preparation Program (EPP).

The Gate system is an important part of maintaining a quality program as required by our licensing and accrediting bodies. Learn more about each Gate below.

Undergraduate Gate 1: Program Acknowledgment

Application Deadline

Complete the Gate 1 application/Gate 1 course prior to the enrollment of:

  • EDUC 221 (Comprehensive and Secondary Majors)
  • EDUC 225 (Elementary, Middle Grades, and Special Education Majors)
  • MUSC 210 (Music Majors)
  • PHED 245 (Health/PE Majors)

Submission

To view the Gate 1 requirements and submission instructions, please visit the SOE Licensure Resource Community.  While Gate 1 does not require the submission of testing or clearances, candidates should review acknowledgement statements carefully as they are expected to begin those processes during Gate 1 so that they have the completed items in preparation for Gate 2.

Undergraduate Gate 2: Program Status Check

Application Deadline

Complete the Gate 2 application/Gate 2 course prior to the enrollment of:

  • EDUC 235 (Comprehensive and Secondary Majors, including Music and Health/PE)
  • EDUC 318 (Elementary, Middle Grades, and Special Education Majors)
  • All practicum courses (e.g., EDUC 188/189, EDUC 288/289, EDUC 388/389, EDUC 488/489, EDSP 488/489, etc.)

Submission

To view the Gate 2 requirements and submission instructions, please visit the SOE Licensure Resource Community.  Testing is involved in Gate 2, so plan accordingly as testing can involve approximately a two-month or more turn-around time to secure a testing date and receive official score reports.

Undergraduate Gate 3: Student Teaching & Internships

Application Deadline

Complete the Gate 3 application/Gate 3 course the fall or spring semester prior to your planned student teaching semester.  The Gate 3 application/Gate 3 course will not be available during summer semesters.  ALL Gate 3 requirements, including official score sheets with passing test scores, must be prepared and completed by the Gate 3 submission deadline.

  • Spring Student Teaching:
    • Deadline: August 15 with fall semester Gate 3 course enrollment (semester prior to student teaching)
  • Fall Student Teaching
    • Deadline: January 15 with spring semester Gate 3 course enrollment (semester prior to student teaching)

Submission Instructions

To view the Gate 3 requirements and submission instructions, please visit the SOE Licensure Resource Community.  Testing is involved in Gate 3, so plan accordingly as testing can involve approximately a two-month or more turn-around time to secure a testing date and receive official score reports.  Testing should be completed early to allow time for retesting, if necessary.  Testing organizations typically require about a month waiting period between testing attempts.
