LU ONE highlights department

Liberty’s Academic Lawn is set to be decorated with an assortment of food trucks, Christian music, free T-shirts and more during Launch on the Lawn, happening Nov. 3 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Students across campus are invited to stop by after Convocation and throughout the day to learn more about LU ONE.

Liberty’s newly renamed department, LU ONE, has a goal of ensuring that all students are not only included in the Liberty community, but are engaged with one another in the mission of training Champions for Christ. The department houses the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Office of Disability Accommodation Support, and the International Student Center to support students and provide campus-wide workshops and events.

“Our primary goal (is to) nurture a body of students with a range of life experiences, conditions and abilities. We will invest in our students’ education, their community engagement, their campus events and cultural events,” Senior Vice President of LU ONE Shon Muldrow said. “Unity in Christ is our highest missional priority as a gospel-centered institution. We want Liberty to look more like heaven in Revelations 7:9.”

So far this semester, LU ONE has held multiple events including La Gran Fiesta Latina, a celebratory event highlighting Hispanic Heritage Month, and the Student Resource Fair, which informed students of numerous campus-wide resources readily available for use.

The department recently celebrated the life and legacy of Chauncey Spencer, a founding member of the National Airmen’s Association of America and one who made it possible for people of color to be trained as Tuskegee Airmen in World War II, by hosting a traveling museum Oct. 23-24.

Now the department is preparing to hold Launch on the Lawn, an event held to celebrate Liberty’s new department and the unity that is embraced on and around campus. Along with learning about LU ONE, the department encourages students to visit the various tables present at the event that provide information on the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the International Student Center, and the Office of Disability
Accomodation Support.

“One of the best things about our campus is (that) each of us is different but united in the same love for Christ,” Melissa Harris, LU ONE communications and branding director, said. “Those differences, when shared with others, can make us stronger — that’s the beauty of LU ONE.”

According to Harris, the department promotes biblical diversity and embraces the unity that God intended for his people since the beginning of time. To learn more about LU ONE or view more upcoming events, visit www.liberty.edu/lu-one.
