Mountain Mash to bring fall festivities

Liberty University’s Snowflex facility is hosting a new event in preparation for Halloween. Mountain Mash will take place at Snowflex’s lodge Oct. 27 and will run 5-10 p.m., and attendees can drop in for as long as they would like.

Mountain Mash will serve as a festive way to celebrate the spooky season for those who aren’t as fond of big scares. The party will include carnival games, music and tubing. Instructors for skiing and snowboarding will also wait on deck for people who want to test out their skills and earn candy.

According to Madeline Morgan, Snowflex’s programming manager, Mountain Mash is mainly geared toward the Lynchburg community, but Liberty students are welcome and encouraged to come. Regular admission will cost $5, but for students and those who come in costume, it will be free.

“It’ll be a really fun atmosphere to just chill and hang out with friends and go tubing, learn how to ski or snowboard, that’s a huge thing,” Morgan said. “It’s a great opportunity to learn how.”

This will be Snowflex’s first year hosting Mountain Mash. Morgan said the event structure is based on an old event held during the summer: Family Fun Fridays. But the purpose of this update is to make it more Halloween-centered and include students who want a fun, relaxing way to celebrate the autumn holiday.

“We’ve never done something for Halloween,” Morgan said. “So, we’re going to decorate up the lodge, … have pumpkins or use creative ways to make games related to Halloween.”

Attendees do not need to sign up in advance for the mash; they just need to show up and sign a waiver for the activities.

Morgan said Snowflex hopes to give students more opportunities to unwind and meet people both inside and outside of
Liberty’s campus.

“I think it just reiterates community and being able to just have fun in a fun and safe atmosphere that’s Liberty approved, Morgan said.

According to Morgan, one of the event’s other goals is to get more people to come to Snowflex.

“It’s just a beautiful place to be on campus, and why not take advantage of it?” Morgan said.

Liberty student Grace Greer said that she would be interested in attending Mountain Mash.

“I’m terrible at skiing and snowboarding, so it would be fun to go and just learn,” Greer said. “I think it’s a good place for students to come together and just do something that’s fun, and it’s a place for them to gather.”

Additionally, a similar event, Monster Mash, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.  at the Hydaway Outdoor Center.
