Hamas attacks Israel; thousands killed

“Israel is at war,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared following the unexpected attack on Israel by Hamas, a terrorist organization. The strike marked the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur war. This new action brought tensions between Gaza and Israel to a fatal climax, resulting in over 1,000 Israeli deaths and 400 deaths in Gaza, with an additional 2,500 injured. On Oct. 8, Netanyahu released a public statement officially declaring war on the Hamas organization.

“The enemy will pay an unprecedented price,” Netanyahu said.

The multi-faceted attack utilized solders on motorcycles, boats and motorized paragliders, and forces infiltrated Israel from many different southern routes. Armed Hamas militants invaded the Gaza Strip to seize hostages and indiscriminately massacre civilians who had been celebrating the seven-day Jewish festival, Sukkot.

An estimated 2,200 missiles decimated southern and central Israel, hitting various locations including an Israeli hospital, military bases and a number of towns including Tel Aviv-Yafo and Jerusalem.

In a televised statement, President Biden condemned Hamas’ strike on Israel and promised American support.

“I made it clear to Prime Minister Netanyahu that we stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support to the government and people of Israel. Terrorism is never justified. My administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock-solid and unwavering,” Biden said.

David Welch, the faculty advisor for Liberty’s Stand with Israel club, spoke about the importance of supporting those being oppressed overseas.

“For now, even just reaching out to any Israeli or Jewish people you know to let them know you are praying for them and for the peace of Jerusalem will go a long way. Dedicate yourself to praying daily about what is happening. Talk to your local church about how to tangibly help,” Welch said.
