President’s Post: Welcome Back, Students!

Welcoming our students back to campus is one of the most gratifying experiences while serving as Liberty University’s president. Our students emanate from across the country and from around the world. Their presence brings life and energy to our campus unlike anything else, which inspires me and our school administrators to continue our strong tradition of Training Champions for Christ.

The nature of my role requires lots of care and attention, but the demands melt right away whenever I meet and converse with our students. These young people are hardworking and motivated to change the world. Their attitudes are contagious, which in turn encourages me to refocus on the ultimate mission of this institution: turning out top-quality graduates who are both equipped with the spiritual knowledge and industry skills necessary to impact their communities for Christ.

This new chapter is particularly significant because Liberty University is celebrating its 50th anniversary. There have been five decades of miracles that have happened right before my eyes. I confess that at the time of our founding, my optimism paled in comparison to founder Jerry Falwell Sr., who described in precise detail the campus, programs, and impact of this school even before a single student enrolled.

As reported in this issue of the Liberty Champion, this semester hit a record-high enrollment. This new wave of students reinforces that Falwell’s vision is more alive than ever before. If he were alive today, he would not be a bit surprised. The success of Liberty University is not because of the work of man, but it is a verification of God’s faithfulness and God’s power to change lives.

When reminiscing on the origins of Liberty University and of the 50 years of miracles, one quote from Jerry Falwell Sr. comes to mind:

“If God’s people will see nothing but the goal line, will accept nothing but victory, will pay any price, will suffer any hurt and hardship, will refuse to be discouraged or disheartened, we cannot help but win; because we are charged with the power of God’s Holy Spirit.”

This semester, I want to remind everyone of God’s ability to use you in remarkable ways. Whether you’re an incoming freshman, a student on track to graduate soon or a member of our far-reaching alumni, I hope that you cling to these words from our founder, who refused to be deterred from God’s calling on his life.

Prevo is the President of Liberty University.
