Students Gather For Despicable Me Themed Bingo

Students, dressed in yellow and blue, gathered together in the LaHaye Event Space for a “Despicable Me” themed bingo night Saturday Oct. 5.

A gathering of faithful minions always attracts supervillains, and none other than Gru and Dr. Nefario made an appearance. These villains created a fun-filled night by hosting a game of bingo, possibly hoping to gain a following for their upcoming heist.

Gabriella Trotte, an event supervisor for Student Activities, described the process for creating themed bingo night events on campus.

“Our team has a lot of fun brainstorming bingo themes that the current student body can relate to and get excited about,” Trotte said.

She also said that the team seeks to provide a theme from pop culture that will inspire students to geek out and dress up as their favorite characters. On average, over 300 students have come out to each bingo night, most dressed as characters that align with the theme.

Hundreds of energetic students sang along to “YMCA” and other songs from the “Despicable Me” soundtrack. Laughter filled the hall as Gru and Dr. Nefario expounded on practical applications of villainy, and at one point flinging a trespassing spider across the stage out of fear. The theme of the night continued whenever students screamed “King Bob!” upon reaching bingo, rather than the traditional victory shout for the game.

Outside of Despicable Bingo, Student Activities also hosted a bingo night during Welcome Week and Bingo: Bedrock Edition at the end of August.

Keera Walbom, a student at Liberty University, said she has enjoyed each of the bingo nights from this semester because of the exciting energy that fills the room.

The relationships built during the event and the fun-filled atmosphere of “Despicable Me” mayhem has fallen right into place with Students Activities’ goal.

“Our goal as a department is to serve and entertain the whole student body through relevant events to develop community and foster culture,” Trotte said.

As Gru and Dr. Nefario depart from the Liberty campus to pursue their next plan for world domination, many have wondered if some of the students dressed in minion costumes have decided to follow them. We may never know for sure (unless the moon shrinks again).

Student Activities will be hosting ‘Twas the Bingo Before Christmas Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. among other events, including a game night in the LaHaye Event Space on Oct. 25. For a full list of upcoming events, visit www.liberty.edu/sa.
