ScareMare: Escape the Shadow’s Reach To Return To Liberty Oct 10

With the start of the harvest season, Scaremare, a ministry of the School of Divinity, will be starting on Oct. 10-12 and will continue for two weekends after that. With the goal of showing the light of Christ, Scaremare brings between 20,000 and 27,000 attendees through the darkness in a warehouse at 2300 Carroll Ave.

“The purpose of Scaremare is pointing people to the hope that is found in Christ,” Joshua Coldren, the director of Scaremare, said.

For over 50 years, the house of death has posed the question of what happens after you die. By reminding people of their mortality, volunteers can point visitors to the hope of Christ. Every year, 1,500-2,500 people accept Christ.

“For us at Scaremare, we want people to come to that place of thinking about their mortality,” Coldren said.

This year, Scaremare’s theme is Escape the Shadow’s Reach. The event is meant to help others escape the reach of Satan and connect with the light of Christ.

Students are encouraged to attend for a fun night where they can build community through the 45-minute walk-through.

While this has been a popular event for many years, some people may be concerned with this way of spreading the Gospel. Coldren encourages new attendees to remember the overall heart and mission behind Scaremare.

“For those that are concerned, I encourage them to come and see it in action,” Coldren said.

In addition, Coldren mentioned all of the lives that have been influenced over the years, including someone who was agnostic, but his life was changed because of Scaremare. Now this man is a consistent volunteer at his church. Bringing others to Scaremare will also enable believers to have a conversation with their friends and family about the hope they have in Christ.

“Even if a student or adult doesn’t accept Christ at Scaremare, it opens up the door to have the opportunity to talk to them,” Coldren said.
