SGA and LUnatics host residential tailgate on the Academic Lawn

Liberty University’s Student Government Association and the LUnatics organization hosted a tailgate on the Academic Lawn for residential students Aug. 31.

The SGA leadership and LUnatics volunteers worked to set up games, serve food and create an exciting environment before the first Liberty football game of the 2024 season.

Because there are not many organized tailgates for on-campus students to attend, SGA President Isaac Kantola joined forces with the LUnatics to create an event that would provide both community on campus and awareness for their separate organizations. LUnatics President Grace Greer, also spoke to the organizations’ desire to serve the students. This was the third year that SGA and LUnatics have worked together to put on this event, and they had at least 30 residence halls participate this year.

Resident Assistants (RA) Rebecca and Rochelle said fostering more community among the dorms as a whole were the main reasons for why they enjoyed participating in the tailgate. Additionally, the RAs voiced how convenient it was for residence halls to participate in the tailgate event. The event planners’ choice of a central location of the tailgate and easy coordination with hall leadership made the event accessible to all residential areas of campus.

Resident Shepherd Madison described the event as a “family reunion.” Not only did the event provide returning students with a reunion, but it also gave new students the opportunity to find community among those from other residence halls.

The event on the Academic Lawn could not have happened without the CSER volunteers for the LUnatics organization.

“I grew up watching sports with my family, and this seemed like a good way to work with sports. It is also good experience, because I may want to work in the sports industry,” volunteer Bella said.

Students attending the event were able to enjoy grilled hot dogs and other food while talking with their hall communities. Throwing footballs, playing cornhole and spike ball were just a few of the yard games attendees participated in. Those who chose not to participate in the provided games were entertained by the music that was played throughout the event.
