Gran Fiesta Latina Event To Be Held Sept. 20

LU ONE will be hosting Gran Fiesta Latina from 9-11 p.m. Sept. 20 on the Academic Lawn and will include music performed by Pololo, Hispanic cuisine, and activities for students and College for a Weekend guests to participate in.

Melissa Harris, the communications & branding director for LU ONE, said the event is to honor the Hispanic culture and help guests learn more about it.

“It’s an opportunity to just celebrate the culture, and what I love about these events is that you get to see this diverse body of students meet new friends and learn about new cultures,” Harris said.

The Gran Fiesta Latina was organized by Tunya Pannell, the director of student engagement for LU ONE, along with her event staff, respective student worker team and a group of CSER workers. Harris said over 700 people will be attending the Gran Fiesta Latina.

“Any student, whether residential, commuter or online, who wants to come is more than welcome to attend the event,” Harris said.

Harris said the event will take place during Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, and the purpose is to celebrate the Hispanic culture.

“A lot about what our office represents is … biblical unity across campus,” Harris said. “One of the verses that I love is Romans 12:4-5, and it talks about how, in Christ, we are one body. As one body, it’s important to make sure that we understand and know all the members of the body. That includes different backgrounds, stories and cultures.”

Harris said the Gran Fiesta Latina will provide students an opportunity to come out for a “night of fun” and to spend time with friends while also learning about a culture that may be different from their own.
