Donald Trump Survives Second Assassination Attempt

The former President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, escaped a second assassination attempt Sept. 15 while at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to The Associated Press.

The first assassination attempt happened this past July at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Thomas Matthew Crooks, the gunman, fired shots at Trump which injured him in the ear, killed a civilian in the crowd and injured two others, according to CNN.

During the day of the second attempted assassination, Trump was playing golf in the afternoon when a few loud gunshots echoed around the golf course. According to CBS News, the alleged gunman, Ryan Wesley Routh, never fired any bullets, and the shots heard were from the Secret Service agent who fired a shot at the gunman once he was spotted.

Due to Routh’s cellphone location, officials discovered that he camped out roughly 12 hours prior to the actual shooting attempt without being caught by the Secret Service, according to CBS News.

After Routh’s escape, authorities were dispatched, and police officials pulled him over on I-95, according to AP. Routh was arrested shortly after.

According to a report by CBS News, Routh appeared in federal court Sept. 16 and has been accused of two firearm offenses. If Routh is found guilty on these indictments, then he will go to prison with a maximum sentence of 20 years.
