Norovirus suspected on campus

Preliminary testing conducted by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has identified the norovirus to be a potential cause of the gastrointestinal illness sweeping Liberty’s campus, as of Feb. 26. Liberty will continue to collaborate with the VDH and other community partners until the illness is positively identified.

LUPD responded to four separate emergency medical services (EMS) calls last Wednesday evening and have since responded to more cases. Students continue to experience symptoms related to gastrointestinal issues, such as severe abdominal pain, dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea.

In one of their most recent email alerts, Liberty announced that the VDH has found no issues with campus dining services after inspecting areas twice within the past week. Campus dining services will continue to operate according to their usual schedules. The Reber-Thomas Dining Hall will continue to provide hot chicken broth, crackers and bottled water to students who are sick.

All classes will proceed as normal, according to a campus alert sent out Sunday, Feb. 25, so students experiencing symptoms should contact their professors.

After cases of gastrointestinal illness increased, the Student Health Center extended its hours this past Saturday to accommodate students experiencing symptoms. In addition, resident assistants in all residential halls have been given rehydration packs to distribute to students experiencing symptoms on their hall.

To avoid catching the illness and to protect other members of the community, Liberty recommends practicing the following: Frequently wash hands with soap and water, especially before eating or preparing food; disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects with anti-virus products, and avoid close contact with those who are sick.

If you start experiencing symptoms, Liberty recommends drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, resting and taking over-the-counter medications to potentially help alleviate nausea and fever. They also suggest staying isolated from others if you are sick.

The Student Health Center is open Monday-Thursday from 8-6 p.m. and Friday 8-5 p.m.

If you are in need of emergency care, please call 911 or LUPD’s emergency phone number (434) 592-3911. Students may also contact LUPD through their non-emergency number (434) 592-7641.
