Liberty medical school creates online E-journal to share research with the world

A medical E-journal is a platform in which medical researchers, including students and faculty, can publish the research they often spend so much time and energy on.  Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) has recently created its own channel, through Cureus Journal of Medicine, to allow students and faculty to publish their research.

Through the LUCOM E-journal, the work of students, faculty and alumni can be seen on large platforms such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Nature and other scholarly publications which helps Liberty authors gain recognition for their work and get their name exposed within the medical world.

This E-journal is not just for graduate medical students. Undergraduate students who are studying nursing or pre-med can publish their research in the journal as well.

Carl Hoegerl, a professor at LUCOM, was a driving factor in the creation of the E-journal. His goal for the journal is to get as many people on Liberty’s campus involved as he can.

“It’s a passion of mine to encourage students to go into research,” Hoegerl said. “This is just a fun way to encourage students to be able to do that.”

Research is very prevalent within the medical field and the earlier a student can start, the better. Therefore, Hoegerl strongly encourages students in undergraduate programs in the field of medicine to use the E-journal to their benefit. Research is only continuing to grow within the field of medicine and students should jump on this opportunity to get ahead in their career and future education, according to Hoegerl.

“We need to encourage more people to do research,” Hoegerl said. “By us being able to provide an experience like this, we think that it will really boost up our curriculum.”

To ensure top quality among its published works, LUCOM upholds strong writing standards before any research can be published to ensure credibility and accuracy within the journal.

Each article goes through a double review. One review is from the editors of LUCOM, and the other is a credible peer review.

Cureus is LUCOM’s partner in the E-journal. The LUCOM E-journal is built within the Cureus site and is automatically published from there onto the bigger publication sites, such as Google Scholar.

“The best analogy that I can use is something like YouTube,” Hoegerl said. “You’ve got the YouTube platform and then you’ve got YouTube channels.”
