Sodexo holds fall Produce Stand

Living a healthy lifestyle can mean going to the gym or eating nourishing foods. Living on a college campus can make that goal harder to achieve, especially when it comes to getting fresh fruits and vegetables.

Liberty University’s dining services have a goal of providing students with quality food that benefits them. Rachel Sanders, Liberty’s campus dietitian, said the upcoming Produce Stand is one way Sodexo tries to meet that goal.

“This is an opportunity for students to purchase whole foods and veggies with Dining Dollars and no upcharge, (and it conveys) the idea that Liberty’s dining does want them to have a healthy experience,” Sanders said.

At this stand, there will be an opportunity to purchase fruits like apples and berries, as well as vegetables like carrots and cucumbers.

Being a college student often comes with being tight on money, but Liberty’s dining services understand this and don’t want money to stand in the way of a healthy lifestyle.

Sodexo has been hosting the Produce Stand for about five years now, and the event is a way for students to experience fun dining on campus away from the usual cafeteria or restaurants. “We want to bring something different to campus,” Sanders said.

In order for this event to happen, there is a lot of preparation done by Liberty’s dining team, including ordering the produce, providing baked goods, advertising the event and setting up the stands on the day of the event.

Produce Stand events are typically held around two or three times per semester, and the next one will be held Oct. 25 on the Montview steps from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s in a central location, allowing all students easy access to the fresh food.

“This is a good opportunity (for students) to get something different with their meal plan money, a different meal option,” Sanders said.
