Gov. Glenn Youngkin is allocating $500,000 to the city of Lynchburg to transform a former A&P grocery store into a commercial and residential space that will hold 28 apartment units. The site will be developed into a four-story building with commercial space including a food and beverage operator on the ground floor, according to the city’s news release.

AC Capital LLC’s plan includes a variety of apartments, such as studios and apartments with up to three bedrooms.

“We are excited to play a role in the continued revitalization of downtown as the cultural hub of the Greater Lynchburg area,” said AC Capitol LLC Developers Will Andrews and William Cook in a joint statement.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares announced the end of an independent review of the shooting at the University of Virginia that killed three students last November. The announcement was made on Oct. 20.

In the days after the shooting, UVA requested an external, independent review of the tragedy in hopes of learning about why early warning signs from the shooter didn’t prevent the shooting and what steps the university could have taken to prevent the shooting.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Miyares’ office chose law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan to lead the independent review and Zachary Terwilliger of Vinson & Elkins law firm to review law enforcement issues surrounding the shooting.

“The deaths of Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry and Lavel Davis Jr. are a tremendous tragedy and we continue to remember them, their families and what they meant to the UVA community,” Miyares said in a statement obtained from his website. “My office, thanks to the work of the special counsels, has procured a thorough report of last fall’s tragic events, and I am thankful for their deliberate efforts.”

House Republicans are scheduled to meet on Oct. 23 for a closed-door forum, where nine candidates were expected to make their pitches to be the speaker of the house. The conference is then scheduled to vote on the morning of Oct. 24 to vote on who to nominate moving forward.

This is an ongoing result of Rep. Kevin McCarthy losing his job on Tuesday, Oct. 3 as house speaker, leaving the governing body without a clear leader to pass legislation. McCarthy was ousted from the position after a vote ended in a 216 to 210 tally, with eight Republicans siding with Democrats to remove him from speakership.

The nine current candidates running include Tom Emmer, Mike Johnson, Jack Bergman, Byron Donalds, Kevin Hern, Dan Meuser, Gary Palmer, Austin Scott and Pete Sessions. Democrats are backing Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
