House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was the first sitting speaker to be voted out of office after eight Republicans joined 208 Democrats in this unified decision Oct. 3, according to CNN.

The vote was led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, who accused McCarthy of turning his back on the GOP after working with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown, reports KCRA 3 News. As Sept. 30 brought the expiration date for government funding, McCarthy had to decide between appeasing House Republicans by cutting government spending or working with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown that would affect millions of Americans, according to USA Today.

The shutdown was avoided, leading to the ousting of McCarthy. In a news conference, McCarthy said, “It is my responsibility. It is my job. I do not regret negotiating; our government is designed to find compromise.”

Possible contenders for the vacant seat are Majority Leader of the House of Representatives Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan.
