Student Activities to host popular event, Late Skate

Student Activities is commonly known for the wide array of events it holds for students each semester. From movie nights and block parties to game nights and concerts, these events are available to students and provide breaks from academic stress.

One such event held for students is Late Skate, returning for the first time since last semester on Friday, Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. in the LaHaye Ice Center.

“Late Skate is another event we host for students to come hang out and make memories later at night,” Chloe Rinaldi, a Student Activities event supervisor, said. “The first Late Skate was (held) in the fall of 2022.”

Although the event is still fairly new to Liberty University, it continues to catch the eyes of both new and returning students every semester. This year, the Student Activities team incorporated more details into the event for students.

“We don’t usually theme our Late Skates, but this one is ABBA themed. We’re hoping students come dressed in their best ABBA attire (to) dance and skate the night away,” Rinaldi said.

ABBA is a popular band from the 70s whose albums included a variety of pop songs still loved around the world today, including hit song “Mamma Mia!”

Skating isn’t the only thing that students are able to do while at the event, as Student Activities also plans to provide refreshments to students as they enter and exit the arena. Bundtinis from Nothing Bundt Cakes will also be available to students while they’re taking breaks from the ice.

“My favorite thing about Late Skate would have to be the skating itself,” Rinaldi said. “I really love ice skating, and having this event free for students makes me happy — plus, the playlists are killer.”

This event is available for all levels of skaters and open to all Liberty students for free. Rinaldi recommends showing up around 9 p.m.

Senior Maya Atland plans to visit LaHaye’s Ice Center again this semester, sharing her excitement about the upcoming event.

“Skating is so fun, especially when you go with your friends. You don’t have to be good at it — I know I’m not — to have a good time,” Atland said. “It’s also a different way to meet new people and experience new things.”
