Fall 2023 calendar announced

Interested in caving, fly fishing, video games, mountain biking or rock climbing? Campus Recreation will be hosting more than 100 events offering students opportunities to spend time outdoors and
off campus.

Campus Recreation strives to provide students with facilities for every interest,  including  Hydaway Outdoor Center, Montview Game Room, Equestrian Center and Snowflex.

Early in the semester, there will be the first Mountain Mayhem event at Snowflex Sept. 15, which will feature a big air contest, giveaways and prizes. There will be a 10-year anniversary party for Hydaway Outdoor Center Sept. 15, which will begin at 8 p.m. and include food, campfires and floating lanterns. The Equestrian Center will be offering free fall hay rides to students on Friday, Oct. 20.

Campus Recreation offers a variety of outdoor adventures such as a sunset hike at the Blue Ridge Parkway Sept. 9, a whitewater kayaking trip Oct. 12-14, a caving trip Oct. 26 and a fly fishing trip Oct. 28.

Those looking for a good workout can enjoy specialty clinics put on by LaHaye Fitness staff, including Olympic weightlifting, 80s barre and plyometrics. Each of these classes will be held in the LaHaye Recreation and Fitness center.  Students are encouraged to come to recreational events to try new things, or to get even better at the things that they already love.

The Montview Student Union Game Room has several different games for students to choose from, such as pool, air hockey, Wii games and Nintendo games. Campus Recreation also provides many board games and  other options for students to check out with their Flames passes.

Campus Recreation has already held a variety of events this summer, including a kettlebells workshop, a stargazing trip at James River State Park and a paddleboarding trip at Smith Mountain Lake.

Additionally, Campus Recreation will host Liberty Mountain Gun Club’s Top Shot Competition Oct. 20-22. Students interested in the Top Shot competition must take the General Firearms Safety Course as a pre-requisite to participating in
shooting sports.

Sarah Thielen, associate director of marketing for Campus Recreation, said that some events are inspired by student feedback.

“We are always happy to hear feedback for each event, and you never know, your idea might inspire next semester’s events lineup,” Thielen said.

Thielen also believes that the offerings Campus Recreation provides students set Liberty University apart from other colleges.

“While many schools have campus recreation programs, Liberty is unique in that we have such a wide variety of offerings for our community,” Thielen said. “Not many schools have a bowling alley, year-round ski mountain, outdoor recreation center, gun club or equestrian center, let alone all of them at once.”
