Students will take part in global education experiences

International Education Week kicks off Nov. 13, with six different events held throughout the week, and ends on Nov. 18.

The International Education Week events, which began in 2012, are an “initiative to be part of the International Education Week, which is run by the state Department of Education,” according to Kristina Bautista, the director of the International Student Center. “It’s all about celebrating global education.”

The first event of the week is the Worldwide Worship event Sunday, Nov. 13, at the School of Music
Concert Hall.

“We’re having Libertad, one of the student groups, and some of the church groups like the 701 Korean Church, another church that’s based out of Richmond and possibly another local church perform,” Bautista said. “(The event) is all about celebrating global cultures and worshipping together in
different languages.”

The International Coffee and Tea Tasting event will be held Nov. 14 where students will be able to sample different types of coffee and tea from around
the world.

Nov. 15 is the Too Hot to Handle Spicy Cook-Off event. Bautista said Nigeria, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand and the U.S. will be competing, and students will have the opportunity to vote on which country made the spiciest and tastiest food.

Students will sample candy and desserts from all around the world Nov. 16 during the International Sugar Rush.

Nov. 17 is part three of the Cross-Cultural Conversations Workshop, “but students can still attend even if they haven’t attended part one and two,” Bautista said.

This event features a student panel and discussion on how to communicate cross-culturally.

The FIFA World Cup Kick-Off party ends the week’s activities on Friday, Nov. 18.

This event will include games and activities, such as creating brackets predicting who students think will win.

Beyond just fun and games, International Education Week is all about celebrating global education.

Throughout International Education Week, students have the chance to see 80 different cultures represented on campus this semester and learn
about the wider world around them.
