According to the magazine, there are nearly 4,000 degree-granting higher education institutions in the nation, and Lynchburg ranks in the top 25. The city was recognized among other notable college towns and cities, including University of Michigan’s home of Ann Arbor, University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill and the University of Alabama’s home of Tuscaloosa.

“As for what makes a great college town, that’s a little subjective, but we like to think it’s a place that has a good mix of educational and professional opportunities, proximity to schools, and plenty of other coeds ready to mix it up,” the magazine said.

The site also noted that surrounding institutions like Liberty University and the University of Lynchburg make up nearly one quarter of Lynchburg’s population, which contributes to making the city “an easy spot to make friends” and “a rather happy place.”

When students begin their search for the right college, they may consider things like academic merit, athletics or the university’s social scene. However, as the magazine puts it, “perhaps the most important thing to consider is real estate 101: location, location, location.”

Lynchburg offers students this location, giving them a variety of sights, scenes and spots to explore. Lynchburg was founded in 1786 and is located near many historical sites, including The American Civil War Museum in Appomattox and the Natural Bridge State Park in Rockbridge, Virginia.

Along with history, the city also offers students the chance to get out of the classroom and into nature.

The city boasts an array of parks and trails where students can run, walk or bike, such as the Blackwater Creek Trail and the Riverwalk Trail. The Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains is only 35 miles away, offering students the opportunity for
mountaintop hikes.

Liberty University student Caroline Breen appreciates the natural beauty Lynchburg offers.

“Lynchburg itself is such a beautiful place to live, just having so much to do outdoors specifically,” Breen said.

Liberty itself contributes to creating an adventurous atmosphere for students. Liberty’s Hydaway Outdoor Center offers students opportunities to camp, fish, kayak, hike, run or walk through its almost 50-mile trail system.

For less vigorous activities, students can find an array of coffee shops, boutiques, dessert options and many places to grab a bite to eat downtown.

Downtown Lynchburg also gives students the opportunity to explore the arts through the Academy Center of the Arts and by visiting Riverviews Artspace’s gallery.

Overall, Lynchburg stands as a top-25 college town in the country, providing students from all over the world with a home for as long as they pursue their education.
