Women’s Soccer Out of ASUN Tournament

The women’s soccer team’s ASUN title dreams came to an end Oct. 29 when the team fell to Eastern Kentucky 1-0 in the ASUN quarterfinals in heartbreaking fashion.

For the vast majority of the game, the teams seemed evenly matched. Neither team generated many exceptional scoring opportunities. All signs pointed to an overtime finish as the score sat at 0-0 with only four minutes left in regulation.

A crucial mistake by the Lady Flames as well as a strong offensive push by the Colonels spelled disaster for Liberty. With 86:49 on the clock, Maddy Lemery provided the lone score of the contest off an assist from Nerea Diego. Liberty could not respond in the closing minutes, and with the final buzzer, the season came to an end.

“It was pretty devastating. I felt like we played an exceptional second half,” Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer said. “We were the better team. We were controlling the game, and you felt like we were just about to break through, but credit to them. They took advantage of a mistake in our defense and capitalized on it, and that was the end of the season.”

Despite pressuring Eastern Kentucky’s defense several times throughout the night, the Lady Flames never managed to get the ball past EKU’s Dean Carly, who finished the game with six saves.

Kacey Jamieson, a senior on the team, spoke about how she hopes to encourage the team in preparation for next season.

“Even though we lost, that wasn’t a reflection of what our team is, so it’s great to have another opportunity to come back and play and show up and show everyone that we’re here to win again,” Jamieson said.

Liberty finishes the season 11-7-1 with a conference record of 6-3.  EKU’s season ended two days later when the Colonels lost 4-0 against No. 1 Lipscomb.
