President’s Post: What Is the Greatest Thing About Liberty?

This week, Liberty University will have another opportunity to welcome prospective students and parents to our campus for the first time.

Many of you remember the first time you came to Liberty and how the decision you made impacted not only where you would go to school, but also how God would direct your path in your education, your career and, most importantly, your life.  A visit here is truly life changing.

College for a Weekend (CFAW) is an important opportunity for students and their families to see for themselves what the Lord is doing at Liberty and potentially how Liberty could become a part of their own story.

Looking across this great campus of new athletic facilities, academic buildings and programming designed to make world changers out of our students, some might ask, “What is the greatest thing about Liberty University?”

I’m often reminded that even though Liberty has seen so much growth and opportunity over these last 50 years, since the early days of the small Bible college in 1971, our success cannot be owed to anything new. Rather, it is a commitment to the One who never changes — Jesus Christ.

That cannot change. We can never fall short of our original mission.

The greatest thing about Liberty is our unapologetic devotion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. No training ground for Christian leaders today can ever be sufficient to meet the challenges of the world or courageous enough to stand against pressures of the age without a total commitment to Jesus Christ and His eternal Word. While Liberty has grown, it will never outgrow its mission and purpose which is found in the Great Commission that we are called to as believers.

Liberty’s numerical growth through the decades came at the cost of tremendous prayer, devotion and sacrifice. My friend, Dr. Jerry Falwell Sr., envisioned what we see and enjoy today on this great campus, but he always believed that Liberty’s mission would never change.

Training Champions for Christ requires an enduring promise that the Gospel of Jesus Christ will always be preached and taught here on campus as a matter of first importance. Whether that be in our classrooms, our dormitories, on the stage of Convocation, in our local churches or on a foreign mission field, Liberty will never fail in its primary mission.

As President of Liberty University, I am so thankful for God’s faithfulness to all of his promises.

The story that started here just 50 years ago is far from being finished.

Many prospective students will be visiting this weekend to determine if their story will be the Liberty story of the future. Many of them will be praying for God’s will for their lives and their education. Will you join me in praying for them and welcoming them to our campus?

As we look to the future and consider all that the Lord has done already, I am confident that He who has begun this good work at Liberty will be faithful to perfect it until the day Christ returns.

Prevo is the President of Liberty University.
