Champion’s Choice: Our Picks for the Upcoming Away Games Against Syracuse and UAB

We are all undefeated still, and Joshua Lipowski had the closest prediction anyone has had all year. With his prediction of 45-16 in Liberty’s favor, he was one point off from the actual score. For Champion’s Choice this week, we are previewing two games as we do not have a print issue coming out next week. The Syracuse game is first and University of Alabama-Birmingham is second.

Syracuse scares me a bit more than one would think. I remember our loss to them two years ago, and while we have improved tremendously since then, even battering them in the Carrier Dome last season, I think this will be a lot closer. Syracuse will be motivated to avenge last year’s embarrassment, but I believe Liberty will get over the line.

As for UAB, the Blazers’ only loss was a blowout to No. 2 Georgia. This will be an immensely difficult challenge for the Flames, but the defense should be able to hinder UAB’s rampant offensive attack. As long as the Flames can score a decent number of points, they will deliver a win.

In last week’s overpowering of the ODU Monarchs, Liberty once again demonstrated how competent the squad is. This week, the team looks to strengthen its case for a spot in the top 25 with a game against Syracuse. Expect Liberty to truly reveal how capable the offense is as it faces what will most likely be the toughest competition the Flames have faced so far this season.

After playing Syracuse, the Flames will face another threatening squad in UAB. Regardless of how the Flames play against Syracuse, expect the Flames to win a close game. Despite early offensive struggles, Willis’ incredible play will propel Liberty to another victory.

Is it bold to say the Flames will beat a Power Five opponent by two touchdowns on the road? Sure it is, but keep in mind that Syracuse lost by 10 at home to Rutgers. Liberty also has a serious talent at quarterback while Syracuse has no one even close to that talent.

Liberty 38, Syracuse 24

This could be a classic trap game for the Flames with UAB opening a brand-new stadium in front of a likely very raucous crowd. That being said, UAB can be volatile, and Malik is Malik.

This game will probably be close as both teams have dual-threat quarterbacks and speedy wide receivers who can catch the ball well. Unless both defenses stop multiple drives, this will be a high-scoring game, and the Flames’ seasoned team should put them over the Oranges.

UAB will have its hands full trying to stop Malik Willis and the Flames’ talented offense. Liberty’s defense will make the stops necessary to solidify their victory over the Blazers.

Syracuse is at Liberty’s mercy in New York. Malik Willis is officially a threat, and the offense is already getting comfortable to the point of dominance going into this game week. I think it will be a breeze for the Flames.

Liberty 45, Syracuse 10

UAB might be in a shiny new stadium, but it’s going to be pretty embarrassing for them when Liberty rocks up. I expect the Flames to annihilate the Blazers in Birmingham, extending their unbeaten run.
