New Position Added to Serve as ‘Spiritual Coach’ in Wake of Falwell Investigation

Liberty University has launched an investigation into all “facets of Liberty University operations” during the tenure of Jerry Falwell Jr., including “financial, real estate and legal matters,” a press release from the Office of Communications & Public Engagement reports.

The Aug. 31 report states the Executive Committee, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, hired an independent firm to dive into the mechanics of the operations over the last 13 years, when Falwell took the post as President and Chancellor of the university.

This decision came after public outcry for Falwell’s removal after a series of scandals, particularly within the last month. Following a collage of “inappropriate” behavior by Falwell, the Committee asked him to take an indefinite leave of absence Aug. 7, to which he agreed. Members asked for his resignation Aug. 24, the first day of classes, which he submitted, but then withdrew that night after consulting his attorneys. He permanently resigned his position Aug. 25.

“While we didn’t know the full scope of the matter, we have learned enough about the past to know that we had no choice but to take the leadership of Liberty University in a new direction,” the press release said.

The release also pointed to a “lack of spiritual stewardship” on the part of Falwell as a reason for the request for his resignation.

Going forward in the search for a new president, the committee will “seek leaders who demonstrate a full commitment to the spiritual mission of Liberty University by words, actions and example.”

A new role was created during the start of the investigation.  A new leader will be hired as a “spiritual coach, mentor and guide” to ensure Christ-like actions in leadership and among all faculty. In the meantime, Acting President Jerry Prevo has been authorized by the Board to use “the full range of his presidential authority” to make changes “to improve ongoing operations” and “enrich the spiritual mission of Liberty University.”
