Liberty Recreation Department Able to Provide Chances for Students to be Physically Active
The fall semester is underway as Liberty students are finding ways to balance their homework and personal lives. Campus Recreation is coming alongside students by supplying outlets for physical, academic and social growth.
Whether using the gym, attending a concert or fishing at the Hydaway Outdoor Center, students enjoy taking a break from their busy schedules. Matthew Hamilton, a student at Liberty, enjoys participating in the various Campus Recreation activities offered.
“It allows me to get in exercise that I wouldn’t get otherwise,” Hamilton said. “And [it] allows me to stay social with friends and provides an outlet away from school.”
While campus recreation is still open, activities are running a little differently during COVID-19. Students must wear masks (except when exercising 10 feet apart) in all recreational buildings. Gym equipment has also been spaced out to promote social distancing, and the number of people allowed in some spaces has been limited. Executive Director of Campus Recreation Jamie Swyers said they are following COVID-19 rules.
“All Campus Recreation facilities are abiding by the state executive orders as well as Liberty University’s Coronavirus Guidelines,” Swyers said.
Campus Recreation encourages students to participate in activities either through individual or one of the many group activities.
“Staying active is important, not only for your physical wellbeing, but for aiding in brain function, mood and sleep health,” Swyers said. “Whether you are staying active by snowboarding at Snowflex, running on the Liberty Mountain Trail System or taking a riding lesson at the equestrian center, we hope to help you plug in to an activity that you enjoy — that will ultimately be more sustainable for you.”
Students also enjoy the opportunity to engage in exercise together. Campus Recreation is providing virtual group exercise and E-Sports IMS in addition to in-person programs. Hamilton finds group exercise important in his life.
“I enjoy the opportunity to work out with other students,” Hamilton said. “It provides encouragement, accountability and is honestly just a lot more fun.”
