Upgrades to Commuter Student Lounge

As school starts up again for the students of Liberty University, the time has come to reveal summer improvements, including the Commuter Student Lounge’s dramatic transformation.

Located in Green Hall room 1887, the lounge was expanded to accommodate the steadily-growing community of commuter students.

“We could fill this space with a lot of stuff,” Sherith Gutzmer, assistant director of commuter student life, said. “But if there are no seats for the students, it would be pointless.”

Students can enjoy the updated kitchen area, which includes a larger refrigerator and coffee bar — both free of charge. They can also enjoy tea and hot chocolate.

Additionally, the resource station allows students to pick up school supplies and use the lounge’s black and white printer. Other perks, such as free lockers, charging stations and a collaborative meeting room, are also included.

Gutzmer said the lounge is meant to be a place where commuters can feel at home.

“We wanted that homey feeling, where the couches and the ambience felt familiar,” Gutzmer said.

To create this atmosphere, the space has a glowing fireplace and a television, along with a larger collection of board games.

Convocation and Campus Community will continue to be streamed in the lounge. Commuter Student Life also helps foster community groups for the students.

Junior Leslie Metayer, a second-year commuter, shared her gratitude for the changes.

“As a regular commuter, I’ve seen how the commuter community has been growing, and I love how Liberty saw that need for growth and made room for it,” Metayer said.

To keep up with other commuter events, students can follow their social media pages on Instagram, Twitterand Facebook.
