Brittany Geier Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

Ryan Klinker’s Feb. 20 article on “Black Panther” handled the sensitive race issue with grace and poise, a difficult accomplishment in this age.  By praising the film for its contribution to ethnic diversity, Mr. Klinker broke the commonly-held stereotype of Liberty students as racist and culturally disengaged.

In addition, his willingness to discuss such a “cultural milestone” helps Liberty students stay connected with our culture.  At a university that trains Christian leaders in every area of society, staying informed on relevant cultural issues is critical.

Mr. Klinker’s assessment of “Black Panther” is more than a mere political pawn.  Director Ryan Coogler creates strong, black characters and a vibrant African culture without demonizing white people.  Despite occasional references to Europeans as “colonizers,” overall the film even-handedly approaches the race issue in a manner impactful to both blacks and whites.

For instance, the film portrays good and evil characters on both sides of the racial divide.  The Africans’ love for the humble, brave T’Challa contrasts with a major battle scene depicting Wakandans fighting Wakandans.  In addition, the Africans both enlist the help of a white American and battle their nemesis, a white European.

In short, “Black Panther” does not over-praise or over-criticize either whites or blacks.  Depravity is shown as common to all humans, regardless of race.  This signals a major victory for Hollywood by embodying Dr. King’s words, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

Let us not be quick to dismiss “Black Panther” as another over-hyped superhero movie or a piece of political propaganda.  This film delves into relevant, timely issues with admirable fairness and brilliant storytelling.

Sincerely,

Brittany Geier
