Costume fun run
Student Activities hosted sixth annual 5K trail race
This past weekend on the eve of Halloween, Liberty University students and Lynchburg locals took part in the Student Activities (SA) Sixth Annual Costume 5K Fun Run.
There was a wide array of costumes, with people dressed as everything from bags of jelly beans to the more traditional Halloween zombie. Everyone showed their creativity when it came to putting together their costumes.
The SA team also brought the course and event space to life through hours of prep work.
“It took us several days to mark the course with mile markers and flagging tape,” Student Supervisor of SA Mariah Herring said. “In addition to getting the course ready for the race, we decorated the pavilion at the end of the race where runners can enjoy food and drinks and where we will award the runners for best dressed after they finish.”
With this race being a “fun run” the course was not set up to be a challenging run for participants but more for them to come out with their friends, dress up and enjoy a good work out.
“The only real challenge with this race is that it is in the dark so it might be a bit difficult for some people, but overall it is supposed to just be a fun night,” Herring said.
This was Herring’s third year working on the Costume 5K and she thinks people love it so much because the race’s theme is focused on having fun.
This year, 138 people registered to participate in the Costume 5K, making it one of the largest night runs Student Activities has hosted.
Another aspect of this race that makes it special is that awards are given to the best-dressed runners rather than the fastest.
This year, Lynchburg local Anthony Krysiewitz and his 5 year-old son Brady were awarded Best Dressed for their matching costumes of the superhero, The Flash.
‘This was our first year running in this race,” Krysiewitz said. “I have run races up here before and I follow the Liberty website to see when they are having races coming up. When I saw this one was close to Halloween, I thought this 5K would be really fun for Brady and me.”
The Holy Cross kindergartner Brady Krysiewitz was in charge of planning the duos matching costumes and he picked ‘The Flash’ because it is his favorite superhero.
This Costume 5K was a great way for students and locals to take part in the fall festivities.
Student Activities plans many other 5K’s and events throughout the year and all information can be accessed on their website liberty.edu/campusrec/studentactivities.
