Students relive the ’90’s

Board games, root beer floats and images from ’90s TV shows welcomed students as they converged on the LaHaye Event space Friday night, Jan. 23, for SA @ Night.

The doors to the LaHaye event space opened at 10 p.m. as students entered into a colorfully decorated room. Balloons hung everywhere and tables were covered in a variety of colored tablecloths.

Students were also able to enjoy the table filled with complimentary sweets. They were eager to get their hands on candy and other sweet treats symbolic of their childhood such as root beer floats, Sour Warheads candies, Baby Bottle Pops and Fruit Rollups.

Prepared for the evening with candy and treats in hand, students scoured the room searching for their favorite board games from their childhood. As some settled in their seats and others mingled with friends, the event officially began with the playing of an episode of “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” The room filled with the sound of students singing along to the popular theme song.

Delighted by the student turnout, event supervisor Kari Moye spoke about the planning that went into the event and the success of the night.

“It really hits home for the seniors,” Moye said. “When you bring back candy or shows, it feels like (the ’90s was) yesterday.”

There were many competitions throughout the night, including a costume contest. After spending time hunting for ’90s themed clothing at nearby thrift stores, freshman Makayla Millington was the winner of an Ihop gift card.

In addition to the costume contest, students sang along to many classic ’90s songs, such as Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” during karaoke.

Opposite of the stage, the back wall was lined with various video games, including “Super Smash Bros.” Another area of the room was entirely dedicated to hula-hoops.

Moye said SA @ Nite is the first event of its kind at Liberty, but students are likely to see much more from the ’90s at the spring Coffeehouse March 21.
