D1 Hockey pours on goals

Handy’s squad put on an offensive clinic Friday night

There is only one word to describe the DI hockey team so far this season: dominant. The Flames continued their dominance as they demolished Kennesaw State Friday night, 16-4.

The scoring frenzy included 12 players, netting at least one goal a piece.

A mere five-minutes after Kennesaw’s first score, sophomore Rick Turner put the first points on the board for the Flames. Captain Joe Smith put the Flames ahead on the scoreboard, 2-1.

“It’s tough going into a game when you know it’s a division two team because you can get into some bad habits,” Smith said. “But we are really stressing that every weekend, and every game and practice we are getting better and giving it everything we have.”

With just under two minutes left in the first period, freshman Luke Baumgarten, defensemen Jackson Kuhn and Josh Cornelissen each scored for the Flames, bringing the score to 5-1.

Junior forward Brent Boeschman, who entered the night leading the American Collegiate Hockey Association with 15 points, continued to impress with a goal and three assists.

“My personal greatest strength is offense,” Boschman said.

The Liberty Flames Hockey Team will be hosting Davenport at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.

“We’re just going to have a good week of practice and get ready because every single guy on our team has to play well,” Head Coach Kirk Handy said. “From our goalies, defense, forwards, every single guy has got to battle hard and be willing to give that extra effort.”
