Hila Spear remembered
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13
This captivating verse is engraved on a sterling silver friendship bracelet which held Dr. Hila Spear and her close colleagues together, but now holds a tighter bond with memories after her passing because of a year of illness. According to Spear’s obituary, a commemoration of life was conducted December 28, at the Heritage Funeral Service in Lynchburg.
As the founder and director of the graduate nursing program, Spear had a passion for mentoring students and taught in Liberty’s Nursing Department for 21 years. Her primary clinical areas of practice included community and obstetric nursing. She also had many articles published related to maternity care issues and teen pregnancy.
Spear received her bachelor of science in nursing from Liberty and was one of the first students in the program. In 1986, she attended the University of Virginia to receive her master of science in nursing along with close friend and colleague, Dr. Lynne Sanders, who is currently an associate professor of nursing.
“She always wanted to teach at Liberty,” Sanders said. “That was her goal.”
Spear was saved in 1972 and was a cherished mother of four children and five grandchildren.
“Her children are faithful servants,” close friend Dr. Cindy Goodrich said. “They are her testimony.”
Spear was known for her sweet Christian spirit, elegance and sense of humor. She was dedicated to students and committed her service to Centra Health as their first nursing research consultant.
Dr. Sharon Kopis, an associate professor and close friend, appreciated Spear’s encouragement to faculty and students.
“You are doing a good job,” Spears sent via text message to Kopis in July. “And that’s all I need.”
Spear will be remembered for her achievement and experience in the nursing department.
Her devotion to God is now a shining example for her former students, family and friends.
