Take Your Jacket: Listening to God’s Voice

The morning started like so many others: the alarm, getting ready, prepping my lunch, my husband’s lunch, and feeding the dog. On this particular morning, there was the added task of prepping my car. I would be driving it to the body shop for repair. While I grabbed the last of my gear for the day, the Lord whispered “You might want to take a jacket in case you have to walk.”

No, I’ll be fine, I replied.

And that’s where I went wrong.

I arrived at the shop, with my husband waiting in our car to take me the rest of the way to work. It turns out that the repair shop had marked my appointment for a different day so instead of dropping it off and then finishing the last part of my travel to work (by being dropped off almost literally at the front door of the building), I had to drive away in my own car. It also meant I would park my car in the parking garage and walk. That’s right. Walk. In the cold, cold air. With no jacket. Granted, it didn’t take me until I was walking in the cold air with no jacket to remember what the Lord had tried to tell me. I recalled His voice of care while I was standing at the counter at the repair shop listening to the staff troubleshoot the mix-up on their calendar.

The Lord is our Good Shepherd. He makes it possible for us to lie down in green pastures (healthy, good for us places where there is abundant supply, provision, and protection). If only we would listen to his voice. As the Lord is described so beautifully as a shepherd, do you know what it means to be sheep? Sheep are described as animals that seem incapable of doing the very things that would be for their own good. Even apparently when we are told to do something. Take your jacket…

My friends, may you be reminded today, to hold fast to the promises of God. He is ready to care for you if you will just let Him in.

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you (John 15:7, ESV).

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is [his] faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23, NIV).

Abide in Him. It’s a promise!
