Salt and Light Part 1

Mustard Seed Chronicles: Story Time with LU Grandma

In April of 2019, I decided to do a study on the words Jesus spoke while on earth as sometimes I found myself reading over them. This morning I read this: Matthew 5:3 NLT “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.” It really got me thinking about salt. It is a preservative; it brings out the flavor of foods as a seasoning. It makes one thirsty. It can be put on our tongues to absorb the capsaicin in hot pepper flavored foods to stop the stinging. It can be put on ice to melt it on the roads and sidewalks. It can be added to an ice cream maker to make the ice colder and can be added to water to kill weeds and any other unwanted growth.

My oldest child could not have salt at all for a good part of his younger years because of health issues. I would cook things for the family without salt and then the rest of the family would add salt to our taste. How boring our food would be without salt!

We’re to be salt to those around us. If we’re being the right kind, we will cause those around us to be thirsty for the Living Water. If our speech is seasoned with salt- the hot words of anger, hurtful words that would burn the soul of another, will never leave our mouths. If we are salt, we can melt the icy hearts of those around us making the hearts have better “footing,” so they are less likely to slip and fall. And adding salt to a frozen heart can make a sweet taste evolve! Our salt can kill the weeds of sin and bitterness that are presently in our hearts and keep them from cropping up again. If our salt loses its properties, it’s tasteless and worthless and we can be thrown out with the gravel. Thank you, Lord for this lesson!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, You have called us to be salt. Please help us to be the right kind of salt to those around us. None of us want to be the worthless kind of salt, so help us not to lose our flavor.

In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen!
