From The Beach To The Mountains

The College Parenting Journey Series

Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

This verse has been a clanging gong for our family these past 18 months. Just shy of ten years ago while attending CFAW with our oldest daughter, standing in the middle of the Hancock Welcome Center, my husband turned to me and said, “I would sell everything to move here.” I quickly responded, “I was just thinking the same thing.”

Fast forward about seven years, smack dab in the middle of the pandemic. It became evident that this may be a suitable time for me to consider going back to school. Continuing to be fond of LU I found myself on the phone with an LUO admissions counselor setting up my course load for the next few months. During this time, my brother-in-law was also relocating to be closer to his LU graduate children and grandchildren here in Lynchburg.

I never had the opportunity to go away to college, so my husband who did, encouraged me to experience as much of being an LU student as I wanted to. I obtained a student ID card, wrote my INDS research paper sitting in the beautiful Jerry Falwell Library, had coffee at Starbucks, and read books out on the veranda. I enjoyed several meals at Slim Chickens, (which I lovingly referred to as “Skinny Chickens”). We attended football games and worshipped at Convocation! On May 12, 2023, I proudly walked across the football field in my cap and gown waving to my supportive husband in the stands. On August 3rd we purchased our Virginia mountain home, six miles from this amazing place called Liberty University!

As we are coming to the close of this story, I can tell you that our Lord and Savior came through big time! It was ten years later in His perfect timing and faithfulness that He provided us an amazing high school for our son, an unexpected church home, new friends, employment here at a university that I love so dearly, and united us with family members!

There is not any shadow of a doubt that our Heavenly Father knows the plans for us, plans for good, giving us hope and a beautiful future! It would be my honor if you would come along on this journey with me assisting, coordinating, and loving Liberty University parents and families.
