Craziness or Serenity- Which Do We Want?

Mustard Seed Chronicles: Story Time with LU Grandma

I learn a lot from watching God’s creation and I hope you do too. This is an account of a time where God taught me a very important lesson. One afternoon in the summer, I was standing outside of Green Hall waiting for someone and I happened to look down over the railroad track by Wards Road. I saw a huge flock of starlings and they were doing their thing of flying this way, then that way, then up, then down, then back over where they had started, and they weren’t getting anywhere just expending a lot of energy. I wondered who was the leader they were following? They were not like geese who have a leader in their V formation!

I looked to the right and there was a hawk just floating on the breeze not flapping his wings like crazy, not trying to get anywhere special, just allowing the wind to take him where the wind wanted to take him.

It was like God spoke to me and said, “Aren’t you humans like these starlings? You go after this fashion, that celebrity, this group, to this agenda, chasing after the wind expending all this energy but never getting anywhere or accomplishing anything of eternal value? I want you to be more like that hawk, just floating in the air letting Me guide you where I want you to go, doing what I have called you to do, just following Me and floating in My rest.”

I had to confess that I had been more like those starlings and I needed to be more like the hawk. And that’s what I want for you. This globe, especially now, can be a crazy place to live on. I do not need to expound on that as you all know it right well. My prayer for you would be what it says in Isaiah 40:31, “But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (NKJV)

It also reminded me of St. Francis of Assisi’s Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

What peace is available to us if we will just rest in God’s promises!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we can get so caught up in the cares of this world. Help us to remember that this world is not our home…Heaven is. We are here for just a short time in light of eternity. Help us to rest in You and in Your promises instead of flitting from one thing to another here on earth. In that way we will accomplish Your will not ours, and we will praise You!
