College Parenting

This Month and Next

Rejoicing is ahead! This semester your student will take more steps than ever before to advocate for themselves and do their own laundry (believe it!). If those were the only marks of adulthood, we might be satisfied but at Liberty University, we anticipate much more. God is at work. “For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endures forever. Praise ye the LORD” (Psalm 117:2).

Visiting Your Student This Month? Use the Online Visitor Vehicle Registration Form and adhere to campus parking guidelines.

Oct. 7 – Add/Drop deadline to register for Fall 2024 CSER projects. See the webpage for CSER 100 and other CSER Dates and Deadlines.

Oct. 10-11 – Fall Break

Oct. 14 – Course registration for Spring 2025 begins when students return from fall break. Room Renewal Requests ($) and Financial Check-In (FCI) will open as well.

Fall Break (Oct.10-11), Thanksgiving Break (Nov. 25-29), and Winter Break (Dec. 14-Jan 5).

Prayer Points

It is mid-semester! Don’t let up. Your students need your intercessory prayers. Continue steadfastly in the whole armor of God, and armor up together!

Pray Ephesians 6:10-18 over them. Partner with your students through prayer against discouragement, confusion, disbelief, anxiety, and despair. May God’s Word protect their mind (2 Timothy 1:7); bless their fellowship and relationships (Psalm 91:1-6), and supply their courage (James 1:2-4).

Whatever is commendable? Get Up. Press on for the prize. Repeat. “Help [your students] press in to discover what is commendable about the challenge they face. Maybe it’s looking back at how far they’ve come already.” Whatsoever’s For Whatever May Be Difficult will help reset your thinking when it comes to challenges at school.

“Mom, I feel awful!” E/4:29 Parent-to-Parent Blog “Caring From Afar When They Are Sick” helps new parents answer the call.

For Your First Year is a calendar of academic dates and prayer points!

College parenting has its prayer points, too! Carry Only What Is Needed and When You and Your Student Disagree may be exactly what your family needs to give your conversations new direction.

College Parenting Tip of the Month

Freedom as an adult can be a shock to students. They will test childhood boundaries and truths. They will look to their peers for partnership and accountability. When the testing is done, they will hold the Truth as their own, and then all else will be tested against the Truth (see Romans 5:1-5).

Quote/Resource of the Month

“We readily accept that it takes time to develop skill and expertise in a sport, yet when it comes to the mind, this wisdom often seems to disappear from our mental logic…There is no shortcut when it comes to mind and brain change. Be patient!” (based on Hebrews 12:1 from “Day 271” of Switch on Your Brain Every Day by Dr. Caroline Leaf).

This Month’s Theme: Perseverance

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22).

“And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1b).

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

Dear Jesus, when challenges arise through our students’ choices, actions, or studies, please help them choose to glorify You and stand firm. Help them balance responsibilities with fun. May they be an amazing influence for Your Kingdom.

In Your precious name, we pray. Amen.

Book Dollars and Book Vouchers Expire on October 3

Julie Williams, Student Financial Services

Book Vouchers and Book Dollars Expire on Oct. 3

Students received an email on Thursday, September 19, with the reminder that their Fall 2024 Book Vouchers and Book Dollars will expire on Thursday, October 3, at 11:59 p.m. (ET). Students can review their remaining balance through their Barnes and Noble College account at https://liberty.bncollege.com/ so they don’t miss the deadline.

If your student has remaining Book Dollars and would like to use them beyond the expiration date, they can visit the on-campus bookstore and request they be placed onto a Barnes & Noble gift card. Otherwise, any unused Book Dollars will not be refunded and must be spent by Thursday, October 3.

If your student has any unused Book Voucher funds, these will be returned to your student’s account. If this results in a credit on their account, the stated amount will be refunded in accordance with the refund preference selection in Financial Check-In (FCI).

Spring 2025 Registration Opens for Returning Students

As students register for their next semester, it is important that they complete Financial Check-In (FCI) as soon as possible to secure their classes and housing for the upcoming semester. The FCI deadline for returning students is December 4, 2024.

Please feel free to contact us at Student Accounts today, if you have any questions about Book Vouchers, Book Dollars, or FCI.

Voter Registration: What You Need to Know

Kenny Craig, Director of Government and Community Relations

Liberty University believes that civic engagement is an essential component of being a Champion for Christ. That’s why we encourage our students to be active participants in all elections. Liberty has its own on-campus voting precinct. This means that students who live on-campus can complete every step of the voting process, from registration to casting their ballots, without leaving campus.

For off-campus students, we are also able to serve as a resource to help students register to vote, and we can give them vital information such as deadlines, voting information, and the location of their off-campus precinct.

This year, the deadline for voter registration is October 15th. However, the state of Virginia allows voters to same-day register on November 5th and cast a provisional ballot.

Should you or your student have any questions about this, please reach out to our Government Relations department at vote@liberty.edu or visit Liberty.edu/Vote.

PFC’s Mission for Families | From the First Day of Class to Commencement

At Liberty University, you can rest assured that the values you instilled in your children will not be undermined. We take pride in creating an environment where your student feels they have a home away from home. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or guardian, we are committed to collaborating with you in guiding your student through the challenges and triumphs of the next few years.

Our goal is to support student success and promote an appropriate role for parents and families within the campus community. We hope to encourage you through your transition as a college family. As you move away from the daily monitoring of your child’s decisions and into the role of a coach who listens, prays, guides, and promotes their resiliency, some days may feel like a struggle. The challenges and struggles – and prayers – are all parts of growth.

The First Days

The first semester in particular will give rise to new experiences, new questions, and many opportunities for your student to practice becoming an advocate of their own – housing, food, time management, friendships, classes, the pace of communication with you, and more.

Every Semester

Most importantly, pray. Cover the highs and lows your student may experience during their academic journey using our Timeline as a guide. We have monthly College Parenting news, and just for you, there are regular Blogs for encouragement on your faith journey as a college parent.

May you be blessed and transition smoothly into this next stage of your family’s life.

We exist to support the mission of Liberty University Training Champions for Christ by sharing information with students’ family members about the resources, programs, and activities available on campus. Our purpose is to build relationships between parents and the university, promote student success, and support parents through the transition of their students being at college – all the while praying for their highest calling in Jesus Christ.
