The New York City Internship That Changed My Life
Hey Liberty students,

Yesterday started like any normal day for a college junior; woke up, got ready for my internship, jumped on the subway to Maison Kayser for a coffee and muffin and walked up 66th and Broadway to work. Okay, so maybe not so normal for most students at Liberty, but I am spending my summer semester in New York City working as a Strategic Communications intern for ABC Studios. Let me rewind and tell you how I got here!
During the Fall semester, I was in my DIGI202 class when two students from the Career Center came to do a presentation.
At first, I wasn’t too sure what they were going to talk about. I figured résumés and interview prep but then I heard “New York City and Washington D.C.” so I started listening. An opportunity to meet my internship credit, live in a new city, and still do it under the support of LU; what’s the catch?
The student workers left and all I could think about the rest of class was the Fellowship.
After doing some digging I started following their Instagram, LUFellowships, and found the web page through Career Services. I told myself I had nothing to lose and submitted an application. It was super easy and took only a few minutes to complete. Within 24 hours I was contacted by a student worker to schedule my first interview.
I had two interviews in the Career Center, one with a student who had already completed the Fellowship and one with the Program Coordinator.
My first one was casual; I was asked some basic questions, learned more about the Fellowship and had the opportunity to ask any questions I had. The second interview was a bit more formal and structured. I was asked more formal questions, told some challenges and set expectations as what I would be doing if accepted.
Overall my experience with both interviews were great, I even found out how to set up my Handshake account and attend a workshop in the Career Center!

Within a few days, I received an email from the program coordinator saying I was accepted into the NYC Fellowship! I couldn’t even believe it. I was about to embark down a path that would lead me to LIVING in New York City for a semester! We wasted no time and started working together the next day.
Aside from opening doors for me within the city, I learned so much about myself and professional development along the journey. My program coordinator walked me through every step of the process starting with a complete overhaul on my résumé, LinkedIn, and cover letters.
We had weekly workshops to go over applications, educational presentations about professional dress and mock interviews, and weekly roundups of new opportunities. My coordinator even gave me note cards and postage for thank you cards!
After months of hard work, perseverance and extra coffee, I did it – I landed an internship with ABC Studios! Now my life has forever been changed for the absolute best. I have to go run some tickets to will call but thanks for reading!
