As you prepared your resume you probably researched the company. But don’t forget to revisit those notes and do even more research.

• Memorize the organization’s mission
• Research recent successes and challenges of the company
• Identify skills and competencies in the job description
• Familiarize yourself with the company culture

Use your newfound knowledge to craft tailored responses for your interview.

Your resume got you the interview, so be prepared to provide specific stories highlighting the skills and experiences on your resume. While reviewing your resume, jot down the real-life stories that showcase you know how to do the work. Approach it like an interviewer: What questions would you have if you were interviewing yourself?

While drafting answers, integrate your company research. For example, if a key part of their culture is teamwork, explain how you have worked with a team. If their mission statement focuses on service, provide examples on how you have served, etc.

Interview preparation can be daunting and the answers you prepared may sound good in your head, when it exits your mouth in a jumbled mess. Practice interviewing with an industry-specific career coach! Based upon the position you have applied to, they can create a mock interview for you.

Start practicing some common questions today!  As you practice, integrate the real-life experiences from your resume.  Structure those examples by using either the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or CAR (Challenge, Action, Result) methods so your stories don’t drone on or completely miss the point.

Tip: Practice in front of a mirror to watch your own facial expressions as you answer a question.
