Residential Commons II begins to take shape

Residential Commons II (left) begins to take shape on the campus of Liberty University. When complete, the high-rise residence hall will look similar to its predecessor on the right.

Liberty University broke ground on its second high-rise residence hall shortly after opening its first, Residential Commons I, at the beginning of the Fall 2014 semester. The L-shaped Residential Commons II is currently taking shape as structural steel is being erected. Installation of wall panels is also underway.

The second commons will have a little over 1,000 beds (Residential Commons I has more than 1,200). The design is almost identical in the two buildings, save for a slightly smaller wing running perpendicular to U.S. 460.

Residential Commons II will open in two phases, the first opening in time for the Fall 2015 semester.

In addition to progress on the newest residence hall, Liberty has also begun preliminary work on a new student center, which will be constructed as an addition to the back of DeMoss Hall. Excavation has begun and the rear hall of DeMoss is being demolished. The old SLAB academic buildings that used to be behind the university’s main academic building were torn down during the fall to make room for the expansion.
