What is a Graduate Assistant?

A Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term used to describe all masters, and doctoral level students who serve in academic or administrative support roles across the various academic schools of the university.

    • Master’s level student
    • Ph.D./Doctoral level student
  • Graduate Student Assistant (GSA)
    • Master’s level student
    • Ph.D./Doctoral level student
  • Teaching Assistant (TA)
    • Terminal Degree level student
    • Ph.D./Doctoral level student
  • Teaching Fellow (TF)
    • Ph.D./Doctoral level student
    • This is only available for select programs.
  • Research Fellow (RF)
    • Ph.D./Doctoral level student.
    • This is only available for select schools.

These positions are unique in that they are only offered to students who are part of a graduate level program at Liberty University, and are chosen based on their overall academic performance, professionalism, and Christian character.

Responsibilities and Compensation

  • Graduate Assistants work twenty hours per week in their assigned academic department.
  • Although job responsibilities vary by department, all Graduate Assistant positions serve as academic support in undergraduate courses and some serve on the graduate level.
  • Each Graduate Assistant is awarded a tuition scholarship equivalent to a full-time course load in their respective degree. Eighteen credit hours are given per academic year (9-credit hours in the fall and 9-credit hours in the spring) for courses listed on the students DCP.
  • Graduate Assistants will also receive either a stipend or hourly wages for each semester of work. Housing and fee’s are not covered.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Graduate Assistants are required to be fully admitted into a graduate program at Liberty University as a full-time graduate student each semester.
  • Graduate Assistants must maintain at a 3.0 GPA or higher. Those with lower GPAs will be placed on academic probation and must raise their GPA the next semester.
  • Contracts are generally for fall and spring semesters although some may include summer pending the graduate school dean’s approval.
  • Graduate Assistant positions are reviewed annually and departments will offer contract renewal based on need and performance.
  • All of our Graduate Assistant positions are residentially based. We do not offer any remote positions.

How do I apply?

  1. Become fully admitted into your Liberty University Graduate Program.
  2. Choose your department of interest (preferably in the school or department where you’ve been accepted).
  3. Inquire about openings with the appropriate department Graduate Assistant liaison to obtain the link to the application. Submit the application.
  4. Allow approximately one to two business weeks after submitting your application before following through with your department’s GSA liaison.

Graduate Assistant Certificate of University Teaching

Graduate Assistants are eligible to earn a Certificate of University Teaching.
